Coming Events

The June election did not mark the end of our campaign obligations. As you may know, running and managing a campaign, the printing and postage and all the other costs add up. The Surlene Grant for Supervisor 2022 is carrying a campaign debt. We are planning a couple of events this fall season to help close those debts with your help.

Local author, playwright and radio personality, Brian Copeland will do a “sneak peak” of his newest stage production, “Grandma and Me: Ode to Single Parents” on Sunday, September 18 at 1 p.m. at the San Leandro Library Theater, 300 Estudillo Avenue, San Leandro.

Be among the first to see this highly anticipated show before it opens in San Francisco - less traffic and easy, free parking in San Leandro. In this new solo show, Copeland examines the issues of single parenting, and asks what it truly means to be a father. Dedicated to the memory of Copeland’s grandmother, Lena Mae Arbee, GRANDMA & ME is filled with Copeland’s trademark style of wit, laughter, and tears.

With humor and poignancy, the Copeland takes audiences on a journey back to 1979 when his mother died suddenly, leaving behind five young children for his bereaved but fiercely protective 57-year-old grandmother to raise by herself. Twenty-two years later Copeland found himself in the same single-parent predicament when his marriage ended, leaving him with three children to bring up. Through the lens of time, Copeland is able to compare and contrast the trials of single parenting in the 1970s with the myriad new challenges brought by the dawn of the tech-infused 21st century. With both laughter and tears, Copeland takes a deep look, from both sides, at what children need and crave when a parent is lost, and all the agonizing, infuriating, encouraging, and above all helplessly loving acts that go into being a father.
